- Back by Popular Demand: Silhouette Portraits by Erik Johnson!
We’re excited to announce that silhouette artist Erik Johnson is returning to Torly Kid for another portrait event. The third-generation artist will be in our store on Sunday, March 4 from 11 am to 4 pm. The silhouettes are done on the spot and copies can be made for an additional cost. (They make great gifts for grandmas! Mother’s Day is May 13th.)
In the age of iPhone apps and Photoshop, there’s virtually no limit to what we can do with digital images, which is what makes the silhouette portraiture (a technology-free craft) a particularly special experience. Your children may be unimpressed by your iPhone’s magical capabilities, but as frequent scissor users themselves, they’ll be fascinated to watch Erik use nothing but his tiny shears and an observant eye to cut out each unique likeness from paper.
We predict this one will sell out, so book your appointment ASAP!
Cost: $25 per child (not including optional framing)
Duplicates of the same portrait: $15

- Get Willow Smith's Grateful Dead Shirt at Torly Kid
When we saw that Willow Smith, whipper of hair and tween queen of crazy fashion risks, had posted this pic of her newly shorn do, our first thought (after “how cute and confident is she?”) was…love the shirt!
The 11 year-old pop star and daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith first broke onto the pop scene at the ripe old age of 9 with her hit single, “Whip My Hair.” She and her big bro, Jaden, are known for their love of fashion and the fun and outrageous outfits they wear to every red carpet event.
So of course, we were delighted to see her in the ultra soft a-line Dancing Bears tee by Chaser($32), which is available at Torly Kid in sizes 2 through 10 and was a best seller at our booth at the Kids Food Festival in Bryant Park in January. (Check out photos from the event at Time Out Kids).
Also spotted in the grown-up version was another tween icon: High School Musical‘s Ashley Tisdale.
Some of our other favorites from Chaser are the Grateful Dead Liberty Bell and Beastie Boys “Check Your Head” tees:
And now, a little something to help you get your dance on:
